How to Choose a Family Photographer

HOW TO CHOOSE A FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER

Annual family photo sessions are a common tradition for many households, especially those with young children. The early years pass by so quickly (trust us we know, we have 2 kids under 4).

It is important to invest in a photographer who will consistently deliver exceptional photos for your family and establish a long-term relationship you can rely on.

LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHER VS. PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER

Lifestyle photographers have become increasingly popular, but if you're not familiar with the industry, you might be wondering: "What exactly is a lifestyle photographer?".

Lifestyle photography aims to capture genuine connections and spontaneous moments. Rather than focusing on traditional posed portraits, where everyone looks directly at the camera.

Truthfully, we here at Mandy & Randy do a bit of both. We think it’s really nice to have a few photos that are more traditional from every family portrait session. However, the bulk of our images lean more towards lifestyle shots.

Ultimately there is no right or wrong look. It depends on what you desire most from your photos and which style aligns better with your family's unique essence.

CONNECTION

The more comfortable you are with your photographer, the more confident and relaxed you'll be during your photo shoot.

Helpful Hint: You don’t have to meet your photographer before the shoot, but we recommend scheduling a video call. You may find common ground to relate to, such as both having children or being working parents.

LOCATION IS EVERYTHING

Most lifestyle family photographers prefer to capture moments in a natural setting, which can include outdoor locations or the family's own home. Shooting in a natural setting adds variety to your session, with factors like weather, lighting, and scenery influencing the outcome.

When deciding on a location, consider your family's style and choose a setting where you feel most comfortable. If you have a deep appreciation for nature and flowers, opt for an outdoor session. On the other hand, if you cherish your home and the sentimental value it holds, consider an in-home session.

Alternatively, some photographers have their own studio or utilize one for their sessions. Working in a controlled environment, free from weather-related challenges, ensures a consistent and polished collection of images.

The photographer you choose should have experience taking the kinds of photos you are looking for, and who is capable of offering location recommendations if necessary.

HOW TO RESEARCH YOUR FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER BEFORE BOOKING

Check out the Reviews

Searching on Google and Facebook is a valuable way to conduct research on photographers. A skilled photographer will have a positive reputation and quality reviews. Take some time to read a few reviews, and identify any common themes. Are they known for their expertise with children? Are they prompt and professional in their communication? Select a photographer who is recognized for meeting your specific needs.

Responsiveness Matters

Right from your initial inquiry, you should gauge their level of responsiveness. Remember, photography is an investment, and you deserve to feel well-supported from the very beginning until the final delivery of your photo gallery, and even beyond.

Consistency is Key

You want to feel assured that the photographer can consistently produce the quality of photos you see in their portfolio for your own family. Take a close look at their portfolio and pay attention to the consistency in their style of shooting, editing, and the types of photos they showcase. You should observe a consistent trend throughout.

Package Inclusions

Pricing and packages can vary significantly. Some photographers offer comprehensive packages that include full rights and digital downloads of the entire gallery, while others charge only for the session and sell prints separately. Aside from considering the price, carefully evaluate the complete package to determine the value you will receive.

Seek Referrals

Start by asking your friends and family for referrals. This approach not only allows you to see the photographer's work firsthand but also provides you with personal reviews of their experience.

We hope you found these tips valuable in finding the perfect family photographer for your next photo session. If you did, please share with friends or family members that may need some extra help too.
